Madeleine Peyroux

A vocalista Madeleine Peyroux pode ser lembrada como a Billie Holiday dos anos noventa. Como Holiday, Peyroux está sendo veiculada como uma cantora de jazz, quando o que ela parece fazer de melhor é cantar blues. Embora Peyroux possa lembrar Billie para alguns ouvintes, há diferenças e ela tem seu próprio timbre e interpretação.

Em 1996 lançou pela Atlantic Records seu cd de estréia, "Dreamland", é uma bela gravação, com a voz distinta de Peyroux não sendo atrapalhada por arranjos complicados. A maioria do acompanhamento no gravação é clara , de modo a preservar uma cantora com uma voz sem igual. O álbum de estréia apresenta um elenco de grandes jazzistas de New York, como o pianista Cyrus Chestnut, o baterista Léon Parker, os guitarristas Vernon Reid e Marc Ribot e o saxofonista / clarinetista James Carter.

Madeleine Peyroux nasceu em Atenas, Geórgia e cresceu entre o sul da Califórnia, Brooklyn e Paris. Ela começou a cantar com a idade de 15 anos, quando ela descobriu o Quartier Latin em Paris e foi cativada pelos vários músicos de rua. Em 1989, ela estava trabalhando com um grupo musical chamado de Riverboat Shufflers, quando começou a ser a solista vocal. Quando tinha dezesseis, ela se uniu ao Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band, passando dois excursionando pela Europa, enquanto a matrícula da faculdade permanecia trancada. Esse grupo tornou a base do seu primeiro álbum, interpretando canções de Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald e outros.
